Doug
IT DIDN’T take a genius to figure out what JB wanted of me. I owed him one hell of an explanation, but I didn’t think he’d feel any better for hearing it. Didn’t think I’d feel any better for telling it, but maybe that wasn’t the point. By the time I worked up the nerve to open my mouth, it was dark. Men in the park across the street would be doing a brisk business. The thought of going out there again sat on my chest like a heavy boot. I’d rather walk out past Wreck Beach and disappear into the Pacific. Didn’t have the stones to do that, but rather that than lose everything all over again every time I woke up.
“I had to get out, but I knew you wouldn’t leave. What was I supposed to do?”
JB shrugged, rippling the muscles under my cheek. “So, did you create your own little rainbow family?”
The bitterness in his voice felt like a slap in the face. I shouldn’t be glad my leaving still hurt him, but that’s the kind of asshole I was. I counted to ten before answering, just to be safe. “No. I thought it’d be different in a big city, but the eighties sucked all over for guys like us.”
JB snorted, but his arms tightened around me.
“I shit you not. All those big dreams we had… they all added up to a handful of magic beans.”
“Don’t you mean a hill of beans, Doug?”
“If I meant that, I would’ve said that.” I dared to hope he was starting to forgive me when he said my name. Jesus, say it again.
“Fair enough.” JB snuggled a little closer.
Another point for me.
“But what about the nineties, or the two thousands?”
I knew I was losing ground when he didn’t say my name again. Hopelessness washed over me, a familiar tug toward hell, but then he moved enough to look me in the eyes. “By then I figured I was doing it wrong. Bought a pickup truck and started chasing women. Wasn’t long before one caught me.”
JB stood and paced between the window and the bed. At least he didn’t have his boots on, so maybe whoever was trying to sleep on the floor below wouldn’t complain and get us both kicked out. He wasn’t soundless, though, and I had to wonder if he’d given up hunting. JB used to be as stealthy as they come, tracking deer and elk for miles without stepping on a single twig. That was my job, screwing up his carefully laid plans. I was busy thinking about that—about things that had happened thirty years ago, about why they should feel so fresh in my mind—when I realized he’d stopped. JB stood beside the bed and studied me, his soft brown eyes drinking in all I’d become, but without the horror of our first meeting.
“What happened with that?”
He looked like he didn’t really want to know, which was fine with me because I had no plans to tell him.
